Leading up to this year's Remembrance Day, we are honouring local Veterans by hanging Veteran banners. These Veterans each have a connection in some way to the Niagara Region. Veteran Feature: William (Billy) Desson and Edward (Ed) Desson 1915 - 1945 (Billy) and 1920-2016 (Ed) William was born in 1915 and raised in Niagara Falls on Desson Ave (formerly Lombard Ave) with his brother Ed. He served in WWII for the Netherlands, where he was later buried. His brother Edward (Ed) Desson also served in WWII for Canada and was born in 1920, living to 2016. This November, they will both be featured on one of our banners in Downtown Niagara Falls! Our street is getting a little more company! We are running a contest with our business owners to see who can come up with the best scarecrow! So don’t forget to stop by some of your favourite local shops and get your photo taken next to them before the final judging on October 30th from 1:00 - 2:00pm (located on the promenade, 4605 Queen Street)! 🎃🧡 Judging of the winner will take place from 1:00-2:00 PM. Judges Steve Wilson of Steve Wilson Studios and The Gallery, the notorious Witchdoctor Utu and the cultural development coordinator for the City of Niagara Falls Kim Van Stygeren, join together to judge and award the winner a $100.00 cash prize for the most creative scarecrow on Queen Street! The time period he served was from 1988-1994, doing peacekeeping in Cyprus in 91’ (former Yugoslavia 92-93). His connection to Niagara is through his stepmother. This November, he will be featured on one of our banners in Downtown Niagara Falls! Veteran Feature: Charles Prince Leard 1910 - 1987 Charles was born in Summerside, Prince Edward Island. He served in WWII. His branch of service included the Royal Canadian Air Force. He moved his family here from Nova Scotia in 1954. He found work as an auto mechanic and worked at various businesses within Niagara Falls, including Canadian Tire. He lived in Niagara Falls until his death in 1987. This November, he will be featured on one of our banners in Downtown Niagara Falls!
