The Sparkle Awards Presents: Deck The Falls

This holiday show your Christmas spirit with a little friendly competition. The Downtown Niagara Falls Business Improvement Area (BIA) is proud to announce Sparkle Awards: Deck the Falls, an initiative that will highlight local properties with their stunning and spectacular outdoor holiday light displays.

“We are incredibly excited to be running this program this year” said Cat Thagard Vice Chair of Downtown Niagara Falls and owner of Cat and Monkey Events. “Downtown has already gotten into the Christmas spirit with the Niagara Falls Christmas Market and we cannot wait to see the holiday magic spread around the City with Deck the Falls.”

This is a free initiative that is open to any commercial or residential property located within Niagara Falls. There are six different award categories, and for each category one business and one home will be chosen. Winners will gain the pride of having one of the best-decorated houses in the city and will also be awarded a gift basket, courtesy of Niagara Peninsula Energy Inc. The award categories are: The Griswald Family Christmas House Award, The Inflatable Award, The Nightmare Before Christmas Award, The Whoville Award, the Winter Wonderland Award, and the Fred Girardo Community Choice Award.

Many of you may have known Fred Girardo as the owner of one of the area’s greatest Christmas spectacles. His house, located on Dorchester Road, was always brightly lit with spectacular light displays that left anyone who saw them in awe. His efforts didn’t go unnoticed, winning multiple awards for his incredible lights and there was no doubt that he would top it this year. Unfortunately, just seven weeks after Christmas 2021, Girardo suddenly passed at 64, leaving behind a wife, two sons, and six grandchildren. We have decided to rename the Community Choice Award to the Fred Girardo Award to honour this amazing man who participated in this program for his grandkids, his friends, and his sense of community.

“The BIA would like to thank Chris Dabrowski for making this program happen and for ensuring that Fred is honoured,” said Ron Charbonneau, Chair of Downtown Niagara

Falls. “We would like to thank Chris for his service on city council creating amazing community initiatives such as the Spooky awards and the Sparkle awards, just to name a few.”

To participate in the event there are some rules that you need to follow. The property must be decorated with an entry submitted by December 9th, 2022. The displays must be lit up between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. every night between December 11th – 20th. You must also put a sign outside of your property showing your participation for the event, which will be provided by the BIA.

If you don’t want to submit your property but want to see the amazing light displays, make sure to keep an eye out for the official map of participating properties throughout Niagara Falls which will be posted on December 11.
